Children's Literature -
It has long been established that reading to a child and having a child read aloud are two of the best techniques for encouraging reading. This book takes that concept one step further by combining the activities in a book with higher level reading for a parent or other adult to read, and beginning reading words and phrases for children to read—all a part of one cohesive narrative. The child's reading turn consists of very easy one and two word combinations. Some words are introduced in the parent's paragraph (highlighted in bold print) repeated on the child's page—sometimes in a different tense. The dog information itself is very basic but introduces concepts such as breeds, dog shows, service dogs, and training tips. The text is accompanied by photographs of dogs in action—most often accompanied by children. There are also discussion ideas and a glossary of terms. Overall, this first in a new series designed to combine modeling and "doing" may be just what some kids need to gain early success at reading. "We Both Read" series. Reviewer: Cindy K.
