After a review of major issues in the macroeconomic analysis of aid, Part II offers a rigorous and up-to-date review of theoretical and empirical debates about aid's macroeconomic impact. It is argued that an understanding of the channels through which aid affects the macroeconomy requires analysis of the links between aid, the policy environment, and economic performance at the country level. Part III comprises four case studies of Guinea-Bissau, Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Zambia. Cases examine the impact aid has on key macroeconomic aggregates such as savings, investment, imports, exports, and the government budget, and show that aid has a positive impact on the level and composition of these variables.
