Children's Literature

Albert fans will be delighted with this new installation in the popular picture-book series about the industrious duck and his friends. Patsy the Pig is the perfect party planner, and she has come up with some brilliant ideas for Albert's birthday. It's to be a spring theme, and she's thought everything out to the last detail. Helped out by the whole gang of dogs, cats, raccoons, and rabbits, finally everything is ready on Friday, the big day. There's only one problem--Patsy forgot to give Albert his invitation! Bringing the garden party hats, card, and cake, the whole kit and caboodle parades through town to find Albert. They just miss him three or four times and get awfully tired, until at last, he is found in the orchard. They immediately have the party, which is a great success, and Patsy takes a well-deserved bow. The detailed illustrations are fun, and the suspense is sure to keep younger kids on the edge of their seats.

School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Albert the duck and his friends return, but this time, instead of him doing all the work, Patsy Pig has organized a surprise celebration for Albert's "all-grown-up" birthday. The animals pitch in with hats and cards, but, unfortunately, the ultra-organized Patsy has forgotten to invite the guest of honor. The party goes on the road, finally catching up with Albert in the barn at the apple farm. Children will enjoy the party preparations and the detailed pen-and-ink with watercolor illustrations. The plot, however, drags on just a little too long. For a surprise-party story with a more humorous twist, try Robert Bender's The Preposterous Rhinoceros: Or Alvin's Beastly Birthday (Holt, 1995). Still, this is a good purchase for libraries in which Albert is popular.-Martha Link, Louisville Free Public Library, KY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
