This latest addition to the "All About" series is an introduction to the physical characteristics, behavior and habitats of various types of lizards. The book opens with a series of questions that are answered in prose-like text with each spread addressing a different topic. Arnosky uses his considerable skills as a naturalist and artist to produce the colorful acrylic paintings. Captions indicate which illustrations are life-size, and black silhouettes clarify anatomical features that distinguish different types of lizards. There are explanatory diagrammatic illustrations of the life cycle and diet of lizards. The book is personalized with the author's own observations from the field, such as "it is not easy to find them. I look for small but obvious lumps on top of boulders" and "every lizard I have seen has seen me first." Unfortunately, there is no table of contents, index or glossary, so while it is filled with lots of information, this book does not lend itself to research reports. It will most likely be enjoyed by the elementary student who has a particular interest in lizards but would not be the first choice for a library book on this topic. Reviewer: Chris Newsham
