Forty-five-year-old David Richards seems to have everything going for him-a successful business, splendid health, and a happy marriage-yet he is not fully satisfied with his life. When his wife, Susan, is killed in an automobile accident, David's security is shattered, and he begins to search for a new sense of self-identity that will help him remake his world. As he embarks on his quest, he discovers in startling fashion that his religious heritage is Jewish rather than Christian. As a result, David's search traverses spiritual territory from the Jewish synagogues of Oklahoma to the kibbutzim of Israel. Wise brings us a well-told tale of a Job-like search for meaning that is neither smug nor condescending in its portrayal of Judaism. Highly recommended.
