Overview

In the first chapter of the Ancient Rising trilogy, recent widower Dan Ryan is visited by a strange being claiming to be the Greek God Hermes. This eccentric character tells him that the Greek Gods of myth are real - and imprisoned on Atlantis - and only Dan can free them. Grief stricken and believing he has little else to live for, he decides to follow the self proclaimed deity's instructions and seeks out an archaeologist who is in search of the lost continent. What follows is an adventurous journey to Greece, Egypt, Spain and eventually - Atlantis itself. Along the way Dan battles with his own sanity, his relationship with God, an attraction to a young companion, sharks, pirates, murderers, an evil billionaire bent on finding Atlantis first, zombies, confusing clues, and the never-ending sarcasm of Hermes. All this - and they haven’t even gotten to the island nation yet - where awaiting them is something much, much worse.

"De la Torre has presented a well-written, fast moving adventure that fits into the Clive Cussler/Dan Brown mode. I enjoyed this one immensely and am sure that you will also. More will be explained in the second volume, ANCIENT DESTRUCTION, which hopefully will be available soon. Be on the lookout for this one."

"I personally loved this book. De La Torre has a tremendous descriptive style that put me right into the middle of the search for Atlantis. Through the search for clues to the ultimate battle of survival for the human race, De La Torre’s fast paced style reminded me of a Dan Brown or Clive Cussler. I particularly found the part where he found out his wife and daughter were killed riveting. The emotion seemed to pour from the pages. My only reservation was the quickness of the read. It ended far too quickly and while the ending set up perfectly for the next volume, it leaves you wanting more. Of course, I assume that was the author’s intent. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys adventure Sci-Fi or Fantasy. This one is the first part of a trilogy, I can tell you I’ll be the first in line waiting for the next one, Ancient Destruction. "

" Dan Ryan is a man that has reached the absolute nadir of his life. He has lost his beloved wife and daughter and consequently is questioning his relationship with God. When taunted by a man claiming to be the greek god Hermes Dan Ryan begins down a path strewn with happiness, sadness, life, death, good and evil. In short, Dan Ryan is in for a world of hurt that is part and parcel of living heroic.

This is a fast flowing story that touches on issues of deity, good, evil, happiness and suffering. At one point in the book I am reminded of Robert Heinlein's "Job: A Comedy of Justice" when the quote "we all report to someone" is tossed out by a deity. Curious? Read the book! Oddly enough, Ancient Rising also reminds of Denner's Wreck (reviewed earlier) and the World of Tiers series.

An entertaining and fast read with interesting concepts. I look forward to the obvious sequel. Highly recommended. "
