Children's Literature

The binding made me immediately think of my collection of Little Golden Books, and what a treasure they were. Now many of the stories have been reissued in a variety of formats. This board book version of the Baby Animals is a delight. The characteristics of about a dozen animals are introduced, raging from the common squirrel and chipmunk to the more exotic kangaroo, giraffe and koala bear. Kids will learn that: koalas live in Australia just like kangaroos; that monkeys can use their hands, feet and tail to hold onto things like a tree branch; opossum can pretend to be dead; and although a baby giraffe makes no sound, he can run very fast. The pictures are reasonably realistic, but they do give the animals a bit of personality. The fox looks sly, the lamb very happy and the skunk shocked to see his friend the opossum looking as if he is dead. The ending is a bit of a surprise as the Baby Owl asks who is ready for bed and who is awake and asleep. A pleasant bedtime read. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
