Gr 8 UpThis series entry explores the positives and negatives of experimenting on animals and humans, gene therapy, organ donation and transplant, and cloning. Each debate begins with a quote that sums up the position the argument will take. Points of view are objectively presented and could be catalysts for lively class discussions. However, the format has some flaws. The lengthy appendix includes time lines, a graph, a sample Uniform Donor Card, and primary-source material such as the Nuremberg Code but there is no indication in the text that they are included, and they are not listed in the index. Study questions for each chapter are in the appendix rather than immediately preceding or following the chapter. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout. The material has been well researched and documented, but students will probably experience some degree of frustration trying to access it.Marilyn Fairbanks, East Junior High School, Brockton, MA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-A look at ethical issues related to biomedicine. The pros and cons of organ transplants, fetal tissue use in research, experimental studies involving animals, genetic engineering, and reproductive technologies are examined. Each chapter also gives background information about the issues, a supplemental bibliography presenting diverse views on topics, and a list of questions for readers to consider. Professionals from many disciplines and those with personal concerns are articulate and persuasive, presenting thought-provoking discussions. The editors have done an excellent job in providing material to help readers develop critical thinking skills, become aware of the complexities of each issue, examine their own opinions and assumptions, and respect those with opposing philosophies. Ann E. Weiss's Bioethics (Enslow, 1985) covers many of the same topics but in less depth. Margot C. Mabie's Bioethics and the New Medical Technology (Atheneum, 1993) is a good springboard into meatier presentations such as this one. A useful resource for classroom discussion, reports, and debates.-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, ORBook Details
