Children's Literature -
Dance is an appealing topic for pre- and early teens. Who doesn't want to make those fabulous moves? This set of "Snap" books explores six forms of movement popular with kids (modern dance being conspicuously absent). In four or five chapters and conversational prose, each volume tells something about the genre's history and shows vital steps and moves. Breakdance or "breaking" is one of the four parts of hip-hop culture, originating in the Bronx during the 70s. Though it faded for a while, breaking has come backβ"b-boys and b-girls" can be seen in movies, on stages, and at competitions around the world. Outstanding moves and comfortable, trendy clothes are important. Garofoli recommends getting in shape by stretching and doing push-ups and sit-ups to build upper body strength. Then it's time to learn some moves by watching video clips, taking classes, or learning from a friend. In this volume, bright color photos show a crew of six demonstrating moves like the kick-step-out and 6-step, spins and freezes, and an amazing one-handed spinning handstand. An important part of breaking is competing at battles, including the huge Battle of the Year in Germany, where crews have just six minutes to impress the judges. "Really, it's about how original you are and how confidently you rock your style," says Big Tara, a New York City b-girl. A friendly format, lots of color, and encouraging words will attract middle readersβjust so they do not forget the endless practice and grueling work behind the dreams. Reviewer: Barbara L.
