More homes have pets than kids--I read that in the newspaper today and it was a surprise. Furthermore, many homes have more than one pet. Among the animals of choice are dogs--often called man’s best friend, and one that kids seem to be drawn to. Bulldogs according to Rake are gentle and loving, but highly protective of their owners. They are the type of dog that chews from the time it is a puppy right on into adulthood. It might be a good idea to keep shoes and other items away from these dogs since they really like to chew. They look like they are medium sized dogs, but they are lower to the ground and heavy. One of my friends had a bulldog and it was strong, slobbery, and pretty hefty and even chewed the doorjambs. Kids reading the book will see full page color photographs of a variety of bulldogs as well as information and pictures demonstrating that these dogs need food and water daily, exercise twice a day, and daily facial grooming. They are also pets that do not tolerate heat well. The closing pages contain a brief glossary, two recent books about bulldogs, and a notice that FactHound can help kids find more information on the Internet, an index, word count, and the targeted grade level as well as the early intervention level which happens to be 14.
