Children's Literature - Chrystie Marino

Blue Reynolds, an aspiring music producer in the Washington, DC metropolitan area finds his world turned upside down after a party that should have been his crowning achievement. His friends turn their backs on him, his girlfriend breaks up with him when they need each other the most, and Whiteboy, slated to enter art school in the fall, may never draw again. With Blue Up Productions all but defunct, Blue must navigate the tenuous relationships of adolescence and find a balance between his dreams, his parents, and his friends. With a little help from one of his mentors, Blue gets himself back on track, letting his interests take a back seat. Blue learns that a delicate balance between the two is a surefire means of success. He sets out to patch up his dwindling friendships, offer Jade the love and support she needs as she cares for her ailing mother, and keep Whiteboy from letting his rage over come him. As a result of his hard work, Blue Up Productions rebounds with a dream gig in New York City, and his parents, impressed with his sudden maturity decide to let Blue go on the trip and pursue his dream. Can't Hold Me Down is uniquely told through the varying perspectives of a diverse cast of characters. It captures the spirit of its Washington, DC setting and each chapter provides lyrics to set the soundtrack. The novel is further aided by the fresh, urban graphic artwork provided by DL Warfield, which truly helps the reader create a mental picture of both the characters and surroundings. It is the second novel in "The Come Up" series. Reviewer: Chrystie Marino
