VOYA

Long known for its Opposing Viewpoints series, this publisher introduces a new series that offers anthologies of essays expanding on international perspectives of controversial issues. Among the other issues covered in the series are the war in Iraq, marriage, freedom of expression, climate change, drugs, famine, and other topics totaling more than twenty-five books. Each series volume offers a variety of opinions on the book topic, selected from a wide range of sources. These sources include periodicals, nonfiction books, speeches, position papers, and government documents. Several features are consistent across the series, including an annotated table of contents and a detailed introduction to the book's topic. Each chapter includes a world map indicating the article topic's geographical location, guided reading questions, and a periodical bibliography. Each book also includes a list of organizations to contact for more information, a bibliography, and a subject index. The most valuable aspect of this series is that it presents the worldwide implications of each topic, allowing the reader to develop a broad frame of reference. The viewpoints presented are from varied sources, with the vast majority of them originating outside the United States. The format of the series is functional, presenting graphs and sidebars to aid in comprehension. Libraries serving high school aged students would do well to seek out this series for its unique perspective on a variety of research topics. Reviewer: Sherrie Williams
