From The Critics

Reviewer: Eugene A Davidson, PhD(Georgetown University School of Medicine)
Description: This book is part of a series entitled "Biomedical Sciences Explained" and is clearly intended for use in Britain.
Purpose: The aim is to provide an introduction to the clinical chemistry laboratory for undergraduate students with little or no science background.
Audience: There is little of value in this text for students in the U.S., including undergraduates majoring in biology or chemistry. It will better serve this population in the U.K.
Features: The coverage tends to be superficial, overly simplistic and, in some cases, is incorrect either in fact or explanation. Each chapter is accompanied by a set of learning objectives and key concepts. The former are valuable although broadly stated; the latter summarize the chapter and tend to reproduce errors within. There are self-assessment questions, which provide a review mechanism for readers.
Assessment: This is not a book I would recommend, as it is overly simplistic and contains some incorrect facts and explanations.

Contains six sections relating to areas of body function required for maintenance of health: input, control, processing, transport and storage, defense, and output. Each chapter provides a brief introduction, explaining the pathophysiology and how major biochemical changes arise as a result of disease processes. A brief overview of important methodology used in clinical biochemistry laboratories is included, giving the student insight into how biochemical changes are measured and how they relate to disease. Features of this series include chapter objectives, keywords and concepts, and questions. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
