Overview

CodeNotes provides the most succinct, accurate, and speedy way for
a developer to ramp up on a new technology or language.
Unlike other programming books, CodeNotes drills down to
the core aspects of a technology, focusing on the key elements needed in order to implement it immediately. It is a unique resource for
developers, filling the gap between comprehensive manuals and
pocket references.

CodeNotes for ASP.NET is a revolutionary update to Microsoft’s Active Server Pages. This edition explores how Web applications and Web services can be developed using ASP.NET. The .NET architecture, Base Class Libraries, ASP.NET form designer,
Web controls, and cross-page and cross-language debugging
are discussed. Scaling ASP.NET to multiple servers,
state management, security, and methods of enhancing performance are also covered.
This edition of CodeNotes includes:

• Real-world examples
• “How and Why” and “Bugs and Caveats” sections that provide
workarounds and tips on what should be taken advantage
of or avoided
• “Design Notes” illustrating many of the common use patterns for
Java programs
• Instructions and classroom-style tutorials throughout from experts

Visit codenotes.com for updates, source code templates, access to
message boards, and discussion of specific problems with
CodeNotes authors and other developers.

Editorials

From Barnes & Noble

The Barnes & Noble Review
We’ve never seen ASP.NET distilled as neatly as it’s done in CodeNotes for ASP.NET. The authors have cleared away all the fat and focused entirely on the meat. Their explanations, while brief, anticipate the questions you’re likely to ask and the obstacles you’re most likely to encounter. Their sample code’s equally concise, readable, and useful. And, in less than 250 pages, they cover nearly every corner of ASP.NET.

The book begins with just enough coverage of the underlying .NET Framework to help you understand ASP.NET’s power (but no endless paeans to Microsoft). There’s a quick, intelligent introduction to the Web Forms paradigm and Visual Studio .NET. Next, the authors cover the entire development process: building controls and forms, debugging, tracing, caching, configuration, and deployment.

CodeNotes for ASP.NET contains crisp introductions to authentication, and to crucial migration and legacy code issues. There are, however, two key omissions. You’ll only find a paragraph on mobile controls. More important, while you’ll learn many techniques you can use in building web services, there’s little coverage specific to them (no SOAP or WSDL, for example).

One feature deserves special praise: This book’s superb companion site. Wherever there’s a topic that cries out for more coverage, chances are you’ll find an eight-digit pointer to additional information at CodeNotes.com. These pointers connect you to additional code and controls, alternative ways to accomplish your goals, and genuinely useful web links. They add immense value to a book that already offers outstanding value for the price. Bill Camarda
