HIV/AIDS is a global catastrophe, threatening social and economic stability in the most affected areas, while spreading relentlessly into new regions. Over the past year, 3 million people died of AIDS, more than ever before and more than from any other infectious disease. Combating AIDS in the Developing World offers solutions to overcome obstacles to prevention, treatment, and support for affected households, with a focus on achieving tangible results. Strategies include the intensification and revitalization of prevention efforts, a stronger focus on vulnerable populations, and the expansion of antiretroviral therapy to reach 75 per cent of those in within ten years. Simultaneous expansion of prevention and treatment, accompanied by sustained investment in health systems, will enable countries to reverse the spread of HIV by 2015.

This set of reference handbooks charts world progress and presents strategies for dramatically reducing extreme poverty in its many dimensions--income poverty, hunger, disease, exclusion, lack of infrastructure, and shelter--by 2015, while promoting gender equality, education, health, and environmental sustainability. This Library is the official, comprehensive point of reference and action plan for achieving the fundamental development objectives embodied in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the UN and world leaders in 2000.
