Overview

How crazy with jealousy can one man be?

Albuquerque private eye Bubba Mabry learns that jealousy can extend beyond the grave when he’s hired by mild-mannered millionaire, Melvin Haywood. Haywood’s wife died six months earlier, revealing on her deathbed that she had been unfaithful to him. Haywood’s tried to put it behind him, but he can’t stop wondering: Who’s been sleeping in my bed?

Interviewing Haywood’s neighbors, Bubba bumbles his way into the confines of the Manor, an exclusive new money community populated by liars and gossips and adulterers. The trail leads to sports doctor Andrew Rollins, but Rollin’s aide, a former NFL player named Ed “Mystery Meat” Salisbury, tosses Bubba out of Rollin’s sports medicine clinic. Rollins turns up dead the next morning, clubbed with a dumbbell in a workout room. Melvin Haywood goes missing, and it looks bad for Bubba’s client.

Meanwhile, Bubba’s personal problems continue to mount. He feels his wife, reporter Felicia Quattlebaum, is getting too deeply involved with a coworker, a rich, ex-television reporter. Bubba’s parents, reuniting after a thirty-year separation, also join in on the insanity, showing up on his doorstep just in time for a swank party at the Manor.

As Bubba’s investigation takes him through exclusive clinics, luxury car dealerships and ritzy parties, he begins to question much of what he believes about love and marriage, loyalty and loss.

In this, his sixth outing, soft-boiled private eye Bubba Mabry gets to see how the other half live. And how they die.
