From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble ReviewCubase has evolved into an extraordinary “virtual studio” for the entire music creation process. No wonder the online documentation is 1,400 daunting pages. Cubase SX Power! cuts to the chase, telling you which features to focus on, when to use each, and how to use them best. It’s a bulldozer for your Cubase learning curve.
Author Robert Guérin is a professional composer and long-time audio instructor who’s used Cubase since its “ancestor” was introduced for the Atari ST. (That’s the ’80s!) Few people outside Steinberg know the software as well -- and this book was tech-reviewed by Steinberg’s own developers.
You’ll start by setting up your environment, including MIDI devices; touring Cubase’s multiple workspaces; and working with tracks and projects. Next, Guérin covers track recording and editing: first, MIDI tracks, and then digital audio. There are detailed explanations of offline processing, audio editing, and mixer and channel settings -- including EQing and dynamics.
You’ll learn how to automate your mixes; sync multiple computers to create one processing powerhouse; create mixdowns that can be mastered, converted, and distributed; and finally, create printed scores from MIDI data. These four chapters are backed by tutorial project files at the author’s web site. Seven appendices cover everything from keyboard shortcuts and web resources to logical editing and surround-sound mixing.
While the title says “SX,” the book also covers the feature subset in Cubase SL -- and it supports both Mac and Windows versions. There aren’t many Cubase books. It’s lucky this one’s so good. Bill Camarda
