A dozen papers selected from those presented at a 1998 conference in London, which also appeared in the conference proceedings, include theoretical reflection and research reports on how culture shapes distinctive way of appropriating and using new communication technologies. They have been revised based on reception at the conference. The general themes are the theoretical approaches of postmodernism, Habermas, Luhmann, and Hofstede; theory and praxis regarding Europe, gender, the Muslim world, and east and west; and cultural collisions and creative interferences on the silk road to the global village in India and Thailand.
