Editorials

Donald A. Godfrey

This collection of seven articles by respected auditory researchers reviews most of the available information about the development of the auditory system. The purpose is to provide insight into our knowledge of the developing auditory system by collecting information from much of the published literature. The book achieves this purpose and provides a timely review of a rapidly growing literature. This book is one volume in a series aimed at advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. This volume will be particularly useful and understandable only by such individuals who already have considerable knowledge of the auditory system but need to learn more about its development. The contributors are among the most respected authorities on auditory development. The book has a pleasing appearance, is amply illustrated, and is well referenced. The most outstanding components are the many well-referenced tables that summarize current information about different aspects of auditory development. These will be valuable for researchers wanting to know the current state of knowledge on particular topics. Each statement is referenced, so that a reader can check its accuracy. The information in this book is current, authoritative, and easily accessible. It should definitely be in any library that needs to keep up with current literature about development of the auditory system. Any auditory researcher who needs to become better acquainted with the state of research on auditory development, or a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow beginning research in this field, will find this book an excellent starting point.
