Overview

Although developmental concepts have held a prominent place in American psychiatry for over fifty years because of the dominance of psychodynamic theory, it is only in recent years that advances in neuroscience have begun to impact developmental psychiatry. James Harris's two volume work on developmental neuropsychiatry sets the agenda for this emerging clinical specialty. Written by an individual with the developmental expertise of a pediatrician, the behavioral sophistication of an adult and child psychiatrist, and a deep appreciation of neuroscience, these two books offer an integrated yet comprehensive approach to developmental neuropsychiatry.
In Volume I, Part I discusses basic neural science, including aspects of molecular neurobiology, developmental neuroanatomy, neurotransmitter systems and neuronal signaling mechanisms, sleep and circadian rhythms, and basic genetics. Part II provides background on cognitive neuroscience that relate to attention, emotion, language, memory, neural networks, and consciousness. Part III emphasizes the developmental perspective which is crucial to an understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. It offers an ethological framework as well as background information on cognitive development, emotion expression and regulation, language development, temperament and personality, and the emergence of the self.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive new two-volume monograph covering biological aspects of child neuropsychiatry. The first volume reviews the biological basis of behavior, and the second volume reviews the clinical aspects of child neuropsychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a synthesis of recent developments in basic neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, ethology, child development, and developmental psychopathology and to apply them to children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric conditions. The author definitely succeeded in this goal.
Audience: The intended audience includes child and adolescent psychiatrists, developmental pediatricians, child neurologists, fellows, residents, medical students, nurses, special education teachers as well as neuroscientists who wish to learn more about pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders.
Features: The first volume is divided into three parts covering basic neural science, cognitive neuroscience, and child developmental research. The basic neural science section contains chapters on molecular genetics, developmental neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, sleep/circadian rhythms, and genetic aspects of neuropsychiatry. The cognitive neuroscience section has chapters on emotion, attention, language, memory, neural networks, and an excellent chapter on consciousness. The final section covers such topics as ethology, cognitive development, emergence of self, language evolution, and temperament and personality. Each chapter contains up-to-date and pertinent references, and the index section at the end of book was quite helpful.
Assessment: This is an excellent, comprehensive and unique new book for students and practitioners in the field of child neuropsychiatry. It will absolutely be the standard in the field. Anyone who is involved in the mental healthcare of children and adolescents should read this book.
