Overview of Dispatches

Written on the front lines in Vietnam, Dispatches became an immediate classic of war reportage when it was published in 1977.

From its terrifying opening pages to its final eloquent words, Dispatches makes us see, in unforgettable and unflinching detail, the chaos and fervor of the war and the surreal insanity of life in that singular combat zone. Michael Herr’s unsparing, unorthodox retellings of the day-to-day events in Vietnam take on the force of poetry, rendering clarity from one of the most incomprehensible and nightmarish events of our time.

Dispatches is among the most blistering and compassionate accounts of war in our literature.

Publishers Weekly

American correspondent Herr's documentary recalls the heavy combat he witnessed in Vietnam as well as the obscene speech, private fears and nightmares of the soldiers. ``Herr captures the almost hallucinatory madness of the war,'' said Publishers Weekly. ``This is a compelling, truth-telling book with a visceral impact, its images stuck in the mind like shards from a pineapple bomb.''

The Washington Post

. . .[Makes] all the right sort of incoming noises that indicate a direct hit. . . .Quite simply. . .the best book to habe been written about the Vietnam war. -- The New York Times Books of the Century, Reviewed November 20, 1977

C.D. Bryan

"Dispatches must be read because, even if there already exists a surprisingly rich selection of writings on Vietnam, nothing else so far has even come close to conveying how different this war was from any we fought - or how utterly different were the methods and the men who fought for us."- Books of the Century, The New York Times, November, 1977
