Overview
From the author's introduction: "The title of this book contains a : its chapters look both at attempts to perfect desire in divine fashion and at the means by which Tennyson's poems try to `divine' the nature of desire itself." The author argues that "Tennyson's poems, his characters, and his speakers employ erotic devotion and artistic creation as the means by which to approximate the transcendence that constitutes their ultimate goal." His interpretation pays close attention to early reception of the poems, alterations to different drafts, and Tennyson's own comments. Author credentials are not given.
