Children's Literature

Have you ever heard someone complain that he or she "worked like a dog?" Historically, dogs had to work hard for their daily biscuit. It's only in recent times that dogs have been kept as pets alone. But there are many interesting and important jobs still being done by dogs today. This well-researched paperback first gives an overview of how humans have bred and trained dogs to help us hunt, farm and herd. The text then explains how certain breeds use their unique physiques and native intelligence to perform a variety of jobs in modern society. For example, did you know that beagles are trained to sniff out illegal foods and plants at international airports? Bloodhounds help police officers follow the trails of criminals or lost children. All kinds of dogs were 'drafted' in World War II, to serve in the battlefield as scouts, messengers and patrol personnel. These are just a few of the fascinating facts waiting for middle grade readers in this entertaining chapter book. 2000, Henry Holt and Company, $16.00. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

Gr 2-5-Looking at the historical role of dogs as helpers from ancient Egypt to the present day, Singer goes beyond the typical canine occupations and includes frequently overlooked specialties such as entertainers and mascots. Even the public-relations duties taken on by presidents' pets are covered. Each short chapter highlights the particular abilities of a group of canines (e.g., hunting dogs, guard dogs, scenting dogs) and then gives interesting details about their duties. Brief anecdotes introduce individual pooches that became famous for doing their job well. For example, Stubby, a bull terrier-boxer mix, received numerous medals and was made an honorary sergeant after World War I, and Balto, a sled dog, was honored for his role in delivering medicine during an outbreak of diphtheria in Alaska in 1925. Singer's spirited writing enlivens the material, relaying her passion for these animals. Unfortunately, the black-and-white photographs are small, and they won't draw readers to the book. Still, the lively treatment makes this a worthwhile addition to pet collections.- Steve Clancy, Colonial Village Elementary School, Niagara Falls, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
