Children's Literature
Not only are the books in this four-part "Natural Disaster" series filled with dramatic photographs sure to mesmerize young readers, the cover shots are spectacular as well. Here, the earth is split across someone's driveway, separating the owner's flowerpots from the rest of world. It is a fitting preamble to this fine elementary study of the unexpected horror of an earthquake. Divided into five chapters, the author covers the reasons, the power behind and the survival of an earthquake. Maps, index, further study and Internet sites encourage young researchers. Difficult vocabulary is explained in a glossary, although most words are clarified in the text. The Mexico City earthquake of 1985 and the Anchorage quake of 1964 are covered specifically. 2001, Capstone Books, $21.26. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Deborah Zink Roffino
