Synopsis

Discusses the causes, formation, effects, and prevention of earthquakes.

Children's Literature

Not only are the books in this four-part "Natural Disaster" series filled with dramatic photographs sure to mesmerize young readers, the cover shots are spectacular as well. Here, the earth is split across someone's driveway, separating the owner's flowerpots from the rest of world. It is a fitting preamble to this fine elementary study of the unexpected horror of an earthquake. Divided into five chapters, the author covers the reasons, the power behind and the survival of an earthquake. Maps, index, further study and Internet sites encourage young researchers. Difficult vocabulary is explained in a glossary, although most words are clarified in the text. The Mexico City earthquake of 1985 and the Anchorage quake of 1964 are covered specifically. 2001, Capstone Books, $21.26. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Deborah Zink Roffino

School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Narrow in scope, these easy-to-read books are reasonable additions to heavily used sections of the 551s. They discuss the causes, effects, and power of the featured catastrophes, as well as methods of predicting them, safety measures, and famous disasters of their kind. Each two-page spread contains a photograph, map, or chart; nearly all are in color and many, especially in Earthquakes, are full-page. Unfortunately, they're more decorative than informative. Dorothy Souza's Hurricanes (1994) and Sally Walker's Earthquakes (1995, both Carolrhoda), Seymour Simon's attractive Earthquakes (Morrow, 1991), and Patricia Lauber's powerful Hurricanes (Scholastic, 1996) are all better choices.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
