Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Cindy L Davis, DNSc(Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System)
Description:This is a succinct update of the 2001 version of Emergency Nursing Secrets. Well written in a pertinent and easy to read question and answer format, this book is an excellent resource for the novice to expert emergency department nurse.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a well rounded follow-up to the first edition. This edition has a wider variety of subjects, up-to-date information, and an easy to follow format. As evidence-based practice and changes in emergency healthcare occur, it becomes vitally important to provide updates to the nurses on the front lines of emergency nursing. This edition meets these objectives admirably.
Audience:This book is written for a wide audience. Novice nurses will find it invaluable and expert nurses, a good resource and validation of their thoughts and practices. The authors are recognized experts in emergency nursing and provide invaluable personal experience to augment the information provided in this book.
Features:The information is grouped into four main categories: practice topics, chief complaints, trauma care, and special populations. Each of these topics then is further divided into disease or body systems. I enjoyed the format of this book immensely. The question and answer format provided me with the ability to lay the book down and then pick it back up later without having to revisit previously reviewed issues. Information is delivered in an understandable but not condescending manner. The key points sections in each chapter are very helpful. The bright green accents are eye-catching, but a bit difficult to read against a white background.
Assessment:The first edition was good and this edition is just as easy to understand, conducive to learning, and well planned. In fact, I don't think this edition actually replaces the first edition, but augments and updates it. This is more suitable for the novice nurse, but the expert nurse can find helpful information as well.
