From The Critics
Reviewer: Carol Fackler, BSN, RN, CEn(East Boston Neighborhood Health Center)Description: This comprehensive textbook of the principles and practices of emergency nursing is the fourth edition of a well known and respected resource for emergency nursing practice.
Purpose: Its purpose is to serve as a practical clinical resource for the contemporary emergency nurse. It addresses assessment and triage principles, life support and resuscitation practices, assessment and management of trauma, and common medical emergencies and professional issues.
Audience: Written for the practicing emergency nurse, it would also be useful to nursing students, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Features: This textbook is organized into chapters addressing the essential principles of emergency nursing followed by assessment and management practices for specific traumas and medical conditions. Flight nursing and legal and forensic issues are also addressed. Interspersed throughout the book are illustrations and tables that nicely supplement the written text. References and bibliographies can be found at the end of each chapter and are comprised of a healthy combination of current literature as well as respected textbook sources. Only three appendices are found in the back, albeit important ones. These are followed by 340 review questions to prepare the reader for the Certification in Emergency Nursing examination. The index is comprehensive and easy to use.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive resource for the practicing emergency nurse. Well organized text is supplemented by pertinent illustrations and tables, and I would recommend it to colleagues in emergency care. Up-to-date references assure the most contemporary guidance in the assessment and management of a variety of emergency conditions. A must for my library!
