Gr 9 Up-According to the introduction, the global ocean (made up of the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans) "holds almost 98 percent of the planet's water and is home to an estimated 80 percent of the world's biodiversity." Although various countries and the United Nations have joined in cooperative efforts to clean up and protect these waters, there are disagreements over their sharing and management. This volume addresses how endangered the world's oceans and coastlines are, potential management and conservation practices, how the world's fisheries can be protected, and how whales can be protected. Each of the four sections has a preface, six articles that take a variety of viewpoints, and a periodical bibliography. Addresses (including e-mail and Web sites) for organizations concerned with the issues debated here are provided. The prevailing themes throughout each article include the need for knowledge, public awareness, the emphasis on technology, and the necessity for worldwide involvement to save the endangered oceans. A welcome addition.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.Booknews
