Synopsis

This book sets out to assist counselors-to-be in developing an informed ethical conscience by first exploring and developing a theoretical understanding of the subject. The goal of the book is to acquaint readers with relevant ethical theory and to provide them exposure to real life ethical issues that are often messy, complex, multifaceted dilemmas that defy simple solutions. In this process, readers are encouraged to explore their own moral and ethical value systems as well as the codes they work from and to begin the formulation of an informed ethical conscience for making sound moral/ethical judgments.

Editorials

From the Publisher

"(This) book helps therapists understand the philosophical bases for ethical choices. It breaks down complex concepts into terms that students with little to no background in philosophy can grasp, without violating the integrity of those concepts' contents. Even though it is written for counselors, I regard it as highly applicable to family therapy, social work and psychology as well."

"The text requires students to see ethics as much more than their respective professional codes and asks that they think about ethics and learn to ground their ethical decisions in multiple theoretical points of view. That is a great strength over any other text I am aware of…. This text is the best presentation I have seen of where ethics come from, how/when to apply ethical thinking, and why we need to do so to be professional."
