Gr 7-12-- Rosenthal has updated his earlier edition (Rosen, 1988), but has lost his upbeat writing style. Nonetheless, this is a clearly written and informative guide. Many occupational opportunities are described, with more in-depth coverage of major areas, such as CPA, tax accountant, and government careers. The qualities needed to succeed in these fields are discussed and a short self-test is provided for readers to evaluate their suitability. Other relevant topics are advantages and disadvantages, how technology has effected accounting, future outlook, and career preparation. In addition to college, work experience and cultivating a knowledge of business are stressed. There is a brief chapter on job hunting. Professional associations, a list of accounting schools (a third of the book), and a copy of the CPA's Code of Professional Conduct are appended. Places to contact for further information are included, but there is no recommended reading list. Gaylord and Ried's Careers in Accounting (VGM, 1991) is much drier than either Rosenthal edition, but is more thorough. --Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZBook Details
