Library Journal

Wilder, a professional consultant, shares her program to help even the most reluctant speaker gain confidence in making presentations. She focuses on two basic areas: technique and personality. The technical skills deal with discovering one's "authentic voice"--the voice that the speaker can use for extended periods and that offers variety, conviction, and resonance. In terms of making eye contact, she recommends talking to one person in the audience, achieving a reaction, and using this as a catalyst toward further interplay with the group. Wilder demonstrates through story and example why companies, and those they train to speak, need to find the fit between the speaker and the message. The steps she recommends offer very specific, time-tested methods for helping speakers find not only their authentic physical voice but their genuine connection with the message they wish to convey. If you buy only one audio program to help improve communication skills, this title should be considered. Highly recommended for public, academic, and corporate libraries.--Kathleen A.
