Although this book's text is only twenty pages long, a young reader will learn some interesting information about fire. The authors emphasize that fires often occur naturally and can be beneficial for the environment. Prescribed burns are also beneficial, but are manmade fires set to protect the wilderness. All fires, no matter what their origin, can rage out of control. Each one-page chapter has an eye-catching title;the photographs facing each page of text are excellent and highlight the preceding information. The authors emphasize that playing with fire is dangerous, but readers are taught that humans and nature can use fires as a very effective method of housekeeping. A variety of nonfiction and fiction books are included in the bibliography and several annotated web sites provide welcome information. The book is part of "Natural Disasters" series. 2001, Gareth Stevens, $19.93. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer:Ellen R. ButtsBook Details
