Gr 4-5-These slim series titles offer historical facts through an examination of famous forts that were a part of the American experience. Laramie encompasses the story of the pioneers as they made their way West, McHenry examines the fort in the context of the War of 1812 and the story of the "Star Spangled Banner," and Sumter addresses the place where the Civil War began. Topical spreads relate a brief history of each place and give a few facts about the site today. The books are clearly written and logically organized. Each page of large-print text faces a full-page, average-quality illustration, photo, or reproduction that complements the narrative. The photos are primarily drawn from historical archives; Laramie also includes a number of modern-day reenactment scenes. These books will have limited use as supplemental material for history units and may be of local interest to some communities.-Betsy Barnett, Eads School District, CO Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
