Editorials

Carolyn Phelan

Stevens relates the story of Emma Edmonds, a Canadian woman who disguised herself as a man, joined the Union Army, and served as a nurse and a spy during the Civil War. Stevens' book is similar in subject and reading level to Reit's "Behind Rebel Lines" (1988) but relies more on quotations from Edmonds' writings and includes an index and source notes, while Reit's more readable offering includes dramatized incidents. Many libraries will welcome another book on this intriguing historical figure.
