Overview
Cooper MacLeish returns, in this gripping, explosive thriller set on the darker side of Chicago's mean streets. Even with his cab-driving days now only a memory, MacLeish doesn't need to look for danger; it finds him. In Get What's Coming, Cooper is newly married to longtime girlfriend Diana and gainfully employed as chauffeur for the very well-heeled Regis Swanson, a powerful Chicago real estate developer. Cooper seems to have found his comfort zone - until Swanson's son Nate is shot at the Blue Angel, the hot nightclub he manages and where the elder Swanson himself is a silent partner. The cops say drug deal gone bad, but Cooper doesn't buy it. All too familiar with society's ragged edges and unable to stand by as Regis Swanson's life disintegrates, Cooper looks for a pattern in a tangled web of deception. Alone, he senses the connection between a misguided hit and a suitcase full of missing cash; alone he follows a trail of tips, near misses, and allegations, which lead to drug money, some fast and loose DEA operatives, a belligerent labor union, and a pair of anomic tourists named Turk and Ferocious Dick. Finally, Cooper will be forced to risk everything to confront the killer at the dark heart.Editorials

The fourth and best of Reaves's strong series about Chicago existential scholar-cabbie Cooper MacLeish features a few new twists. Cooper and his trilingual love, Diana, are getting married, and he has taken a regular gig as chauffeur for real-estate tycoon, Regis Swanson. As darkness begins to swirl around Swanson, and, by default, his loyal driver, a criminal stashes $1 million with a girl. The girl has another lover, who has an enterprising friend. The lover takes the cash; the friend shoots the lover; the criminal whacks the girl. All this activity interests three DEA agents and two representatives of those who claim to own the cash. Swanson's son, thought to have the missing money, is soon dead. But the money doesn't surface, and, as Swanson's empire begins to totter, Cooper steps in to help. The motivations of Reaves's hero may not always be clear, but the twists and turns of this caper are pure joy to follow. Earlier titles include Fear Will Do It and A Long Cold Fall.Publishers Weekly -

Cooper MacLeish, hard-boiled cabby in a hard-boiled town, now serves as chauffeur for Chicago real estate developer Regis Swanson. After someone shoots Swanson's son, Cooper risks his life amidst druggies and unionists to find the shooter. From the author of Bury It Deep (Putnam, 1993).Wes Lukowsky
The fourth Cooper MacLeish novel finds the tough Chicago cabbie newly married and employed as a driver for real-estate mogul Regis Swanson, whose n'er-do-well son turns up murdered along with a couple of his coworkers at the nightspot his father had bought for him. As Cooper drives Swanson, the two develop a rapport. Cooper admires his boss' business savvy and basic decency; Swanson likes--and later needs--Cooper's street sense and toughness. With the official investigation into the murders going nowhere, Cooper starts to poke around, if only to find out who's tailing him and keeping Swanson under observation. He uncovers a rat's nest populated by drug dealers, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and some union thugs locked in a dispute with Swanson. This tightly plotted tale offers sizzling dialogue, a vibrantly drawn Chicago setting, and a genuine tough-guy hero who won't be intimidated and doesn't fold under pressure.Book Details
