Synopsis

Simple text and photographs present the features and care of hamsters.

Children's Literature

A hamster can be a wonderful pet and this selection in the "All About Pets" series uses simple declarative sentences to describe the major characteristics of hamsters—fur, and cheek pouches. Like all living things they need food and water and a clean place to live. Hamsters are nocturnal so they sleep during the day and play at night. The "Words to Know" section contains more information than the book. Full-color pictures appear on the left-hand page and the single sentence text on the right. There is also a list of other books and Internet sites for more information as well as an index/word list. Since the back matter is written at a much higher reading and comprehension level than the text, adult assistance will probably be required to effectively access or use these resources. 2001, Pebble Books, $13.25. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
