Synopsis of Horrible Harry Bugs the Three Bears

Horrible Harry has always loved insects, and he's recently discovered a new favorite: earwigs! When he tries to share his passion for the creepy critters, though, no one but Song Lee will listen to him. So when Miss Mackle assigns the class to act out a fairy tale, Harry takes the opportunity to rewrite the classic “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” And his version gets everyone in room 3B to pay attention to earwigs. But will the class think his play is hilarious . . . or horrible?

As an added bonus, the complete text of Harry's play is included in the back of the book, so readers can perform it, too.

Children's Literature

Harry is horrible in many ways, but his love of bugs tends to freak out a number of his friends, especially Sid, who is truly frightened by them. Harry has been digging in the dirt and found a dead earwig that he has named Edward. He wraps Edward in a tissue with the intention of holding a burial service. In the meantime, Harry's class has been directed to come up with a play based on a fairy tale. He and his usual group of friends decide to do a variation on the Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They have their usual problems, controlling Harry, deciding which of the girls will be Goldilocks, which Harry actually is instrumental in resolving, and then putting on the play. The entire play is printed at the end of the book, in case kids want to act it out themselves. Kids in early elementary school will certainly relate to Harry and his friends, and since this is part of a series, they will probably want to read the other two dozen books. Parents, teachers, and librarians be prepared! Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
