Children's Literature - Peg Glisson

Trains, planes, subways, buses, vans, bicycles, ferries, trailers, and tractors all are used to transport people and goods. On every other page, the formulaic text reads, "Look at… How does it get…" or "How will it travel …?" The succeeding page uses a short declarative sentence to state the means of transportation. Since nothing is said about how the vehicle works or who drives it, information gleaned from the text is minimal. Like others in Rourke's "The World Around Us" series, the singsong, repetitive sentence pattern makes for rather uninteresting reading. The "Teaching Tool Comprehension Questions" on the back cover might kick off a more in depth discussion about moving goods and people. A short glossary, a brief index, suggested reading, and web sites are provided. The web sites are age- appropriate, with coloring pages and activities on tractor-trailers and airplanes.
