Gr 9 Up—This title uses research and economic theory to explain the current situation in the U.S. as well as to posit possible solutions. After a brief overview of the history of immigration in the country, the topics of both legal and illegal immigration are covered in separate in-depth chapters. The special cases of high-skilled immigrants and refugees and asylees are dealt with in their own chapters. The debate over immigration, the challenges of assimilation, and contributions that immigrants have made to the American economy help complete a well-rounded overview of the subject. The conclusion's unique question-and-answer format allows readers to find quick answers to controversial topics. The weakness of this format is that the issue, having been dealt with earlier in the text, does not always give the impression of being unbiased (even though it is) because the research behind the argument was presented elsewhere in the book. A reference to the section where the topic is dealt with in more depth would have been a particularly helpful addition to the conclusion.
