Overview

Let Us Pray portrays a tax-weary America plagued by governmental corruption. As protest mounts, one renegade citizens' group plots the destruction of the IRS and its thousands of personnel.

What the insurgents haven't figured on, though, are two brothers - professional killers with a conscience - who are poised to play both sides against eachother.

Moving from the sun-drenched Mojave desert, to the high-stakes gambling tables of Las Vegas, to the blood-soaked killing grounds of Baja, California, and combining feverish eroticism with high-voltage action, Let Us Pray dazzles with its vision of a society beginning a headlong descent into anarchy.

In this New York Times Notable Book of the Year, a renegade citizens' group plots the destruction of the IRS and its thousands of personnel. What the insurgents haven't figured on, though, are two brothers--professional killers with a conscience--who are poised to play both sides against each other. "A chilling look into the future."--Clive Cussler.

Library Journal

A highway murder described in clinical detail is just the first glimpse of the unsavory characters and dirty dealings related in this gripping tale. The abrupt opening sequence quickly shifts to several apparently unrelated scenes featuring prostitutes, a less-than-holy priest, a couple of mercenaries, and even the President. The disparate elements are eventually tied together to form an intriguing plot revolving around a national tax revolt, with the cabal's main thrust being to destroy all of the Internal Revenue Service offices. Meanwhile, the U.S. government attempts to crush the revolt regardless of cost. Reader James Naughton's uncanny ability to portray a wide range of voices helps keep the tale's characters straight; a necessity for enjoying the multilayered, fast-moving plot. The author's prose is deft and witty, yet prone to frequent graphic sexual and violent passages. For most adult collections.-- Susan McCaffrey, Legg Middle Sch. Lib., Coldwater, Mich.
