Liv Ullmann, the Norwegian actress who gained recognition in Ingmar Bergman's Persona, The Passion of Anna, and The Shame, could have probably enjoyed a long run under the Swedish filmmaker's tutelage. Instead, she departed for the more glamorous venues of Hollywood and Broadway and became an occasional writer, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund, and ultimately a director. This compilation of 31 interviews, spanning her most prolific years from 1972 to 2004, bears witness to the greatness that can be achieved when a woman, face to face with her image as "Mother Earth," is willing to try something different. Interviewed by journalists, a novelist, and film critics such as Molly Haskell and Judy Stone, Ullmann freely discusses motherhood, her unique style of acting and directing, the culture shock she experienced when she temporarily migrated to America, and her hang-up over being a female director with a male film crew. Complementing Ullmann's two memoirs, Changing and Choices, this collection edited by Long (James Ivory in Conversation) sheds more light on one well-accomplished artist. Strongly recommended for large public and academic libraries.-Victor Or, Vancouver & Surrey P.L., BC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
