Synopsis

A simple introduction to magnets and magnetism, discussing attraction and repulsion, compasses, electromagnets, and how to make a magnet.

Children's Literature

Perhaps you have played with magnets or have some magnets on the refrigerator door. Ever wonder why some metals are attracted to the magnet? Read about the information on magnets and try out some of the experiments using magnets. The basic information in this text from the "Science Alive" series on physical science provides a very brief and general background about magnets. There are color photographs and diagrams that are found throughout the book. Young readers may need additional support in understanding the different informational text features (table of contents, diagram labels, illustration captions, subheadings, glossary, bold print, and index) along with the content vocabulary. There are four experiments for the young scientist to try; one of the activities recommends having an adult help with slicing a piece of cork for making a compass. Each activity has an explanation describing what occurred during the experiment. For those young scientists or teachers, there are a few websites included for further investigation about magnets.
