Light fields that interact with the ocean surface will contain a fluctuating component induced by reflection and refraction at the random air-sea interface. The stochastic behavior of these light fields is the central theme of this volume, which collates historical results and places them in a common format, and provides phenomenological models of surface-wave-induced light field fluctuations in the marine environment. The approach adopted is one of singling out one part of the problem (e.g., the reflected light field or a whitecap-structured sea) and developing a rational statistical description of that phenomenology. Recourse is made to established statistical descriptors of the environment when they exist.
