The term 'assessment literacy' is increasingly being used in education as teachers are required to know more and more about assessment and accountability. Most of today's public educators, however, were never required as part of their pre-service training to learn the ins and outs of this complicated subject matter. A professor emeritus at the University of California at Los Angeles and a former test maker, James Popham is a nationally recognized expert on educational testing. For 30 years he taught courses at UCLA in instructional methods for prospective teachers and courses in evaluation and measurement for master's and doctoral candidates. He has won several distinguished teaching awards. In January 2000, he was recognized by UCLA as one of the university's top 20 professor of the 20th century. Dr. Popham has written 20 books, 180 journal articles, 50 research reports, and 150 papers presented before research societies. He is a past president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). He was also the founding editor of Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, a quarterly journal published by AERA. He currently consults with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and several state boards of education on educational testing.
