Patricia Dole - Children's Literature

This brief, simply-written overview gives the basic facts of population, agricultural crops, money, language, religion, principle cities, city and country life, seasons, Aztec history, family life, government, elementary and secondary education, favorite pets, resorts, sports, typical meals, arts and crafts, geographical areas, points of interest, and holidays such as Holy Week, Independence Day, the Day of the Dead, Cinco de Mayo, and the Blessing of the Animals. Adding interest to the text are the legend of the poinsettia, in which a poor girl's gift of a handful of weeds to the Baby Jesus miraculously becomes a bouquet of beautiful red flowers, the construction and use of the piñata, a children's word game, and a recipe for cinnamon oranges. The large, handsome format is attractively illustrated with excellent color photographs of various shapes and sizes. A table of contents, glossary, bibliography, Internet site, and list of useful addresses of embassies and other government offices are included. The series is "Many Cultures, One World." 2003, Blue Earth Books/Capstone Press,

Library Journal

K-Gr 3-This extremely simple book covers some aspects of Mexican culture but offers no information on the country's history and almost nothing on geography. The contents page highlights a craft (a paper bag pi ata), a map of Mexico, a game, and a recipe. The book includes a list of basic facts, a folktale, and a few paragraphs each on pets and on sites of interest. Each spread contains color photos. The text is clear and easy to understand, but the information is extremely limited.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
