Overview

Diagnostic pathology is an inherently flawed science due to the many possible interpretations of various tissues. However, the application of immunohistochemical stains as a diagnostic tool has been widely used since the 1990s as an extremely effective ancillary technique that removes much subjectivity from the practice. In fact, immunohistochemistry has supplanted simple morphologic evaluation as the definitive diagnostic method for a wide array of tumor types. Peiguo Chu, MD, PhD, is Director of Surgical Pathology at City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, California.

Lawrence Weiss, MD, is Chairman of Pathology at City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, California. Dr Weiss is the editor of the Cambridge Illustrated Surgical Pathology series and the author of Lymph Nodes, a book within the series.

Description: This atlas contains side-by-side comparisons of immunohistochemical stains and their interpretation for organ systems and related tumors. All images in the book are also included on the enclosed CD-ROM.
Purpose: The goal is to provide a modern atlas-based resource for immunohistochemical interpretation of the major anatomic sites and related tumors. This atlas effectively provides color pictures and interpretations to address the subtleties pathologists commonly encounter when trying to interpret immunohistochemical stains.
Audience: The book is geared toward practicing pathologists and pathology residents, both of whom sometimes need visual reinforcement for interpretation in the evolving field of immunohistochemistry. The authors are renowned for their knowledge of the subject and are leaders in this field.
Features: The strengths of this book are the side-by-side, similarly aligned pictures with various stains, easy to understand tables, and succinct text. The atlas covers all of the major anatomic sites and related tumors. Each anatomic site has a table with all of the major tumors and the associated staining patterns, allowing readers easy and quick access to immunohistochemical interpretation in an anatomically based approach. The arrangement of figures and associated captions leads to occasional searching for the correct text associated with the figure.
Assessment: The usefulness of this book stems from its uniqueness and high quality images. Most books on immunohistochemistry are geared more toward those in the field of immunohistochemistry and not toward the practicing pathologist. With this book, pathologists are able to see proper interpretation of immunohistochemistry in side-by-side comparisons. There is less emphasis on the science of immunohistochemistry, and more emphasis on interpretation and its proper usage.
