Overview

A man is digging in a dark bog in Denmark. His shovel strikes a body. There's a rope tied around its neck-was this a murder? Yes, but it's a murder case for archeologists. These are the remains of a human sacrifice that occurred more than 2,000 years ago!

What to know more? Unwrap this Information About: how ancient Egyptians made mummies; what the experts learned about the most famous mummy of all time; the mummy of a woman warrior found in a pyramid in Peru; and whether being an archeologist might be in your future!

Children's Literature

Following a format similar to an investigative television show, this informative and colorful book explains mummies in a graphic manner to young readers. Squeamish readers should heed the warning on page three and "read something else" if gruesome or gross photographs freak them out. A part of the "24/7 Science Behind the Scenes Mystery Files," this book explains the process of Egyptian mummification in vivid detail. Also provided are photographs of Carter's discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb. Emphasis is placed on new technology which allowed scientists to determine that, unlike the former belief, King Tut was not murdered by a blow to the head. Included as well are the Bog Bodies of northern Europe and other cases of mummy discoveries. Archaeological terms are defined early, appear in bold type throughout, and are defined again in the "Dictionary." Insight into the field of archaeology is provided through interviews with archaeologists, a quick aptitude quiz, and notes about how to begin to learn more about this career choice. Photographs of archaeological tools and a dictionary are also quite helpful. Educators and parents may be a bit skeptical about the tabloid-like cover with its bold yellow banner, but they should look beyond the cover to a small book packed full of fascinating information about mummies.
