Despite remarkable advances in the understanding and management of impaired left ventricular function (LVF) and related coronary disease, the prevalence of heart failure in the U.S. and the resulting death rates have almost tripled in the past 3 decades. New understanding of the relationships between the myocardium and LVF demonstrate a direct correlation between myocardial viability and improved patient survival. Features: The monograph contains 18 chapters divided into five areas. Each chapter comes with an extensive list of references. Ischemic cellular physiology, clinical issues, and diagnostics are well discussed. Echo, SPECT, PET, and MRI scanning techniques are all covered well. From a basic science viewpoint, the ischemic effects of nitric oxide, cellular energy cycles, and cellular channels are discussed. There is a particularly good section on thallium and myoview scans.
Assessment: With this monograph the editor brings much information on myocardial viability together into one place. The basic and clinical aspects of stunned and hibernating myocardium are important to clinical decision making about revascularization. These are important clinical topics and all the answers are not available. This text is a good start for interested professionals.
