Children's Literature

Nellie McClung, living in the early 1900s and fighting for women's rights, is anything but typical. School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-Part three of this trilogy continues the fictionalized account of the life of Nellie McClung, a famous Canadian author and pioneer of the women's equality movement in the early 1900s. Although an interesting story overall, the book lacks solid character and plot development. There are large jumps in time between scenes and chapters. One scene follows the birth of Nellie's fourth child, the next has him at six months, and the next at several years old. To her credit, Crook has done a fine job of incorporating factual information and there are extensive notes for each chapter. However, as a whole, the narrative is tedious and too disjointed to hold readers' interest.-Shilo Halfen, Chicago Public Library Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
