Description:This pocket guide to neuroanatomy and function is based largely on the drawings of Frank Netter, MD, the famous medical illustrator.
Purpose:Netter's diagrams are combined with a series of tables summarizing key points of clinical anatomy and occasionally pathology.
Audience:Students and more senior trainees with an interest in neuroscience may find this work helpful. The editors are clinical neurologists from Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
Features:The book begins with gross anatomy of the brain and spinal cord and proceeds through the brainstem and components of the cerebral cortex. In each case, overview drawings are followed by detailed drawings of component regions. Drawings are in full color and well labeled. Each drawing is accompanied by a table highlighting anatomic and functional relevance. Occasionally, key points of pathophysiology are included as well. While the majority of drawings come from original work of Dr. Netter, to complete the set of illustrations, workers trained in the Netter style contribute as well. Chapter headings delineate the general anatomic region of the brain and spinal cord to be presented. A detailed index of approximately 10 pages allows adequate access to content.
Assessment:This book highlights the outstanding work of Dr. Netter, who died in 1991. The editors combine the original drawings with tables, which effectively summarize relevance. Given the abundance and quality of illustrations, this is a worthy complement to a standard anatomy or neuroanatomy text.
