Children's Literature

This "You and Me" entry in the "Read and Learn" series hammers home the concept that life is taking turns and sharing with others. Each spread is headed by a bold type question, such as "Where Can You Take Turns?" and text and pictures show children in the housekeeping corner and on the slide. The text also introduces the "Please" and "Thank you" that can be heard when people take turns. This is one of the more didactic titles in the series and would be useful early in the year when teachers are establishing classroom rules. Photographs in this series include a wonderful diversity of people. An ending quiz, a picture glossary, and a small index help readers become familiar with nonfiction text and some of its conventions. In addition, the layout of the text encourages new readers to tackle the books in this nicely done series with real success. 2004, Heinemann Library, Ages 3 to 6.
